Georgia has a lot of discarded peaches at the end of a season and nobody needs to tell you about all the orange peels we produce each year. Apparently there are microbes that can break the sugars down in these fruits and fruit by-products to produce hydrogen. If you don’t know why that’s important, you remember hearing about the Hindenburg blimp explosion? It was floating on Hydrogen…

Here’s an excellent article about the power of Florida and Georgia fruit >

Florida’s 2nd Largest Bank Reports, “Florida is in a Recession”

Florida is in a recession.

So says a report from the state’s second largest bank.

The state’s economy shrank from April through June, according to Wachovia Economics Group. It was the first quarterly decline in 16 years.

At the same time, the nation’s gross domestic product grew.

“It takes a lot to produce a decline in gross state product,” Mark Vitner, Wachovia’s senior economist, said Friday. The combination of the free fall in home values and sales and the decline in construction-related employment walloped the state, he said.

Florida Small Businesses Meet with Governor Crist

Trying times was the subject of a meeting between Florida small business owners and Florida Governor, Charlie Crist.

Florida State Governor Charlie Crist

Florida State Governor Charlie Crist

Gov. Crist joined Florida small business owners from across the state for a meeting in the Governor’s mansion on Tuesday. The governor invited them to have discussions about the various ways the economy is detrimental to their Florida businesses.Florida is home to over two million small businesses. Crist has focused on the economy during several recent public events with businesses and workers.

“We’ve worked so hard with our friends in the Florida House and the Florida Senate, Democrat and Republican alike, to try to reduce the cost of property insurance, reduce the price of property taxes, and the high cost that has put as a burden,” said Crist.

The Governor took the opportunity to ask the group of Florida business owners about whether or not they supported offshore Florida drilling for oil. There were no takers to answer that question.

Florida is experiencing a period of slow growth, and some area of the economy are even in reverse. That’s to be expected as the cycle of recession is not an uncommon one. Small businesses will do well to buckle down and cut costs in every area possible, save their employees and focus on the tried and true business success practices that work for their particular Florida industry.

Florida State’s Economy Slipping Fast?

Some economists are saying that Florida’s economy is underperforming the USA economy overall. That’s tough to believe, but they’re saying it! Here’s a business article from a Florida business journal…

“Florida’s economy has been underperforming the U.S. economy for the past year,” Vitner wrote in his report. “Underperforming the nation is something Floridians are not really used to.”

The last time the state’s economy underperformed the nation was during the 1990-1991 recession and the 1973-75 downturn prior to that. Both of those recessions hit real estate, which Vitner called “the lifeblood of Florida’s economy,” particularly hard, he said.

A wave of hurricanes that resulted in a run-up in insurance costs have complicated the current downturn, while soaring property taxes and battles over congestion and growth management also have taken a toll.

“The Sunshine State still remains an attractive place to do business but has clearly lost some of its luster in recent years. Various rankings of competitiveness show Florida slipping relative to Texas, North Carolina and Georgia,” Vitner said.  Read full article at the Jacksonville, Florida Business Journal >
